Custom motorcycle gas tanks come in a variety of configurations. There are the universal fit gas tanks, which traditionally have 2 "D tabs" for mounting. These tabs are welded to the tank on the front and back, and usually require you to drill the tabs prior to mounting. This style of universal gas tanks are designed to fit on or over a single round backbone that is usually present on custom chopper frames, or earlier style Harley Davidson Frames, Triumph Frames, or XS 650 Frames. When mounting, the installer should weld threaded bungs into the frame on the motorcycles to ensure the integrity of the frame is maintained. Universal fit gas tanks allow the installer to choose where on the frame they would like to mount the tank. Throttle Addiction stocks a variety of frisco Sportster tanks, as well as many configurations of Wassell style gas tanks.
The other style of custom gas tanks feature custom designs and shapes, but have mounting provisions on them to fit specific stock motorcycle frame applications. This would be called a "bolt on" part. No fabrication is required to mount this style of tank. We carry custom tanks for Harley Sportster frames, as well as Softail and Shovelhead frames.
Lastly, Throttle Addiction carries stock replacement fuel tanks for many Harley applications. These would include stock Sportster gas tanks, Panhead gas tanks, Shovelhead gas tanks, and Knucklehead Gas tanks.
After you've selected your new custom gas tank, be sure to pair it with a new petcock and gas cap. Throttle Addiction carries the appropriate motorcycle petcocks and gas caps to fit all of the gas tanks that we sell. Over time, rubber gaskets on these items wear out, so be sure to replace yours when purchasing a new tank. Most custom gas tanks seem to utilize the small and compact 1/4" NPT petcock, and the Harley style Cam gas cap. We stock a variety of styles for both of these parts.
